Leo and Catherine E. Schein Memorial Scholarship Fund

Dec 20, 2013 | Scholarships

The Leo and Catherine E. Schein Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System on December 20, 2013, to benefit UT Austin’s College of Natural Sciences. The endowment, created by Dr. Catherine H. Schein, will support students participating in computer science and engineering programs.

The endowment, named for Catherine’s parents, serves as a reminder of their belief in and support of higher education. Unable to finish college themselves, Catherine’s parents made higher education a priority – and ultimately a reality – for their seven children. The couple believed every child should have the same opportunity.

Another source of inspiration for Catherine was witnessing the plight of a former UT Austin student. “He tried to maintain a job at a hotel to send money to his mother and siblings,” Catherine said, “which was an obstacle to staying in a demanding STEM major.”

The desire to help students challenged with pursuing complicated coursework while facing financial barriers, coupled with her parents’ passion for higher education, greatly influenced Catherine’s decision to create the endowment.

Catherine’s son, Benjamin Braun, graduated from the University with bachelor’s degrees in Science and Mathematics in 2013.

Gift funds for the Leo and Catherine E. Schein Memorial Scholarship Fund were provided by Dr. Catherine H. Schein and the Kodosky Foundation.
