The Keyes Family Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System on August 9, 2006, for the benefit of the College of Engineering. Gift funds were provided by Mr. John H. Keyes, Jr., a 1943 engineering graduate, and his wife, Mrs. Luella B. Keyes, of Englewood, Colorado.

In the summer of 1942 it was John Keyes’ goal to complete his BS in mechanical engineering before he was due in Annapolis to report for naval duty. The fall tuition cost $25, but John did not have the money. When a summer job came up with the athletic department, John worked at Gregory Gymnasium, closing the gym every night at 11 o’clock. He was able to pay his tuition with the money he earned, finished his degree, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy Midshipman V-7 Program in May of 1943. John says he is forever grateful to the athletic department and the job that got him through UT on time.

John married Luella Bruce of Earlville, Illinois, in 1947. Lou was educated in Illinois schools and the University of Tulsa. Their son, John, no longer living, attended Wyoming and Texas schools and earned an electrical engineering degree from the University of Wyoming in Laramie. John was employed by General Electric.

John and Luella hope the Keyes Family Endowed Scholarship Fund will affect the lives of many students and provide them an education far into the future. This endowment reflects the lives of the Keyes, and they appreciate supporting the dreams and dedication of burgeoning engineers.
