Tom and Bitsey Hail Endowed Presidential Scholarship

Mar 13, 2014 | EPS/EPF

The Tom and Bitsey Hail Endowed Presidential Scholarship is open to eligible students of any major, with first preference given to students who are receiving support through the university’s Horns Helping Horns Program. The scholarship was given by Melinda and Mike Lafitte to honor Melinda’s parents.

Tom and Bitsey are both Longhorn graduates from Houston. Tom graduated with a degree in petroleum engineering in 1957, and Bitsey earned her degree in home economics education the following year.

Bitsey and Tom Hail
Tom spent his career in the oil and gas industry and in real estate. Bitsey taught middle school. As the Hail family grew, she became a full-time homemaker and entrepreneur. A love of gardening led her and a friend to start a business, Landscape Design, which they ran for more than 20 years.

Tom and Bitsey have a heart for UT and for helping those who aspire toward a college education. They have quietly served their community in Houston and throughout Texas. This endowment is created to honor their spirit.

Michael and Melinda Lafitte
Melinda and Mike, who live in Dallas, are also UT graduates, and both are alumni of the McCombs School of Business. Mike earned his finance degree in 1983, and Melinda earned hers in marketing in 1984. They are proud Longhorns who welcome the opportunity to give back to their beloved university while honoring Melinda’s parents.

Melinda and Mike give this endowment in the spirit of faith, family, and education that Tom and Bitsey inspire in those around them.

The Tom and Bitsey Hail Endowed Presidential Scholarship was established by the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System on March 13, 2013, to benefit The University of Texas Office of Student Financial Services. The endowment honors Mr. Thomas Lynch Hail and Mrs. Edith Elliott Hail. Gift funds were provided by Mr. Michael James Lafitte and Mrs. Melinda Hail Lafitte.
